Pueblo City Schools board member Dan Comden was honored by his peers Monday night for his dedication to public education and his service to Pueblo.

Comden, a two-term board member, was presented the Mc- Guffey Award by the Colorado Association of School Boards at its fall regional meeting held in Pueblo.

The McGuffey award is given to school board members who bring committed and passionate service to their boards.

Comden, who is term-limited, is in his eighth year on the city schools board.

He will leave the board in November.

Comden was nominated for the award by Superintendent Maggie Lopez and Stephanie Garcia, school board president.

"Dan is an excellent role model for all of us and an ardent supporter of educational excellence for all kids," said Lopez. "We are proud to have him on the PCS team."

Both nominators lauded Comden's support of the arts and music programs in the schools and the community and his commitment to student-athletes as a member of the Colorado High School Activities Association's board of control.

As a parent, Comden served on the South High School site-based committee. He is the school board's representative to the Pueblo Area Council of Government.

He also works with students to help them reach their education goals as an instructor with the Alternative High School Diploma program at Pueblo Community College.

Comden was first elected to the school board in 2003 and was re-elected in 2007.
