Pueblo's top high school games to watch this week: Cannon Game, volleyball, golf and more

The prep sports season for Pueblo area teams has come to a midpoint, and with that comes a lot of home games and exciting matchups for this coming week. 

This week's games to watch include some action on the golf course, big matchups on the tennis courts, and of course, the granddaddy of them all, the infamous Cannon Game will take place this week with Pueblo East hosting Pueblo South. There is also lots of volleyball, softball, and even unified bowling to check out.  

Each week, the Chieftain selects the best home games to watch for the week. Here are our selections for the week: 

Boys Golf

  • Pueblo South vs. Pueblo East vs. Pueblo Centennial at Pueblo Country Club, at 9 a.m. on Sept. 18
  • Pueblo East vs. Pueblo Centennial at Walking Stick Golf Course, at 9 a.m. on Sept. 20

There are a few matchups this week in the world of golf as Pueblo South, East and Centennial battle it out on Monday at the Pueblo Country Club. Then East and Centennial will meet up on Wednesday at Walking Stick Golf Course.

Unified Bowling 

For the third straight year, Pueblo has been crowned unified bowling state champions with Pueblo Central winning it all this year. Steve Decker, Avery Taylor,
Theo Romero, Jordan Aguilar, Desire Lopez, Trinity Baker, Terra Salazar, Isaiah Bibby,
 Chidozie Onwuka, Jacob Ruybal, Xavier Salazar, made up the team for the Wildcats. Nov. 18, 2022.
  • Salida vs. Pueblo South at Big Daddy's Bowl (Pueblo Colorado), at 4 p.m. on Sept. 20
  • Pueblo East vs. Pueblo Centennial at Big Daddy's Sunset Bowl, at 4 p.m. on Sept. 20 
  • Rye vs. Pueblo West at Big Daddy's Sunset Bowl, at 4 p.m. on Sept. 20
  • Pueblo East vs. Pueblo Centennial at Big Daddys Sunset Bowl, at 4 p.m. on Sept. 20
  • Pueblo County vs. Pueblo West at Big Daddys Sunset Bowl, at 4 p.m. on Sept. 20

Unified Bowling is back in Pueblo and the city of Pueblo hopes to defend its championship reign as at least one Pueblo area school has won the championship each of the first three seasons of the sport. Salida and Rye will come down to visit as Pueblo East, West, Centennial, County, and South will all compete this week at Big Daddys

Girls Volleyball 

  • Elizabeth vs. Pueblo South at Pueblo South High School, at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 19
  • Pueblo Centennial vs. Pueblo County at Hornet Gym, at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 20
  • Pueblo South vs. Pueblo East at Pueblo East High School, at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 20
  • Pueblo Central vs. Pueblo West at Pueblo West High School, at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 21 
  • Dolores Huerta Prep vs. Swallows Charter Academy at Swallows Charter Academy, at 7 p.m. on Sept. 21
  • Fowler vs. Rye at Rye High School, 7 p.m. on Sept. 21

Volleyball is in action this week as several Pueblo area schools will face off against one another. Pueblo Centennial visits County on Wednesday and South and East battle it out the same night. Then Central visits West and Dolores Huerta travels to Swallows Charter for a matchup between the two Class 2A schools.

Football

Lots of football action this week as Centennial has its homecoming game on Thursday against Discovery Canyon. Then on Friday, the game of the week is the Cannon Game as East hosts South for a chance to retain the cannon. Also on Friday, Central visits County and West hosts Far Northeast at CSUP. To round up the evening, Rye is hosting Trinidad on Friday as well.

Plenty of action on the pitch this week with some good matchups to watch as well. Pueblo West and Central battle it out on Tuesday followed by Centennial vs. East. While those games go on, Pueblo County will host Pueblo South at Hornet Stadium. Then on Thursday, we will see some out-of-town teams come into Pueblo as Dolores Huerta hosts Ellicott and South hosts Elizabeth. Lastly on Saturday, Central will host Harrison at Dutch Clark.

If you love tennis, this is your week as there is plenty of action on the courts. All the Pueblo teams are in action this week with Centennial visiting Central on Monday, then East visiting Centennial on Tuesday. Also Tuesday, County host West. On Wednesday, Fountain Valley visits Centennial while County visits South. Thursday will see Fruita Monument against Central and then East visits West. Finally on Friday County and South battle it out while West visits South, both matchups in the morning. To finish the week off County and South face off at 9 a.m.

Softball

Softball action is starting to heat up the diamond. This week sees West hosting Coronado on Monday. On Tuesday, East visits West, Centennial visits County, South will battle Central, and Dolores Huerta will host James Irwin. Thursday sees West going to Centennial and County visiting Central. Finally, Saturday has East hosting Dakota Ridge and Central hosting La Junta. Both games on Saturday are in the morning.
